This building on a holiday park site had been neglected for some time, and as usual it had been updated in the 20th century with unsympathetic materials. We were asked to assess the condition of the roof structure, repair where necessary, and be finished and scaffold removed in time for the park to open for the summer.

We found that the beetles had eaten a lot of the sapwood but for the most part the timbers were in a satisfactory condition. we were fortunate that the majority of plaster, laths and glass fibre insulation had been removed the previous year to help dry the building out.

We set about cleaning and de-nailing the timbers and assessing which ones weren’t worth saving, happily all the principal rafters and the framed in purlins were in good order. This meant that the few rafter we did need to replace were easily removed allowing for a new piece of oak to be framed into its place.

All jobs come with unforeseen issues, in this case, it was necessary to rebuild a small softwood dormer window on the back side and repair the dentil brick course along the eve on the front of the building.

This was all finished a week ahead of schedule, allowing plenty of time for the roofers to replace the peg tiles and for the scaffolding to come down.
